After I woke this morning, my guide showed me where some good food was – there were dates that lay on the ground. They were very sweet, with a prune-like surface. After getting my fill, my guide and I set off. He told me he was a middle class person, meaning he was either a merchant, farmer, trader, and so on. He was a farmer and a trader. First he showed me his farm. Rows of crops lined a field, waterways webbing from the field towards a river, which I learned was the Tigris River. He taught me about irrigation, which is leading water to crops. Out of nowhere, two dogs bounded up to me. He later introduced them to me as his dogs, Ching and Rikki. He then talked to me about the plow, which basically is a tool that drills small holes in the ground to plant crops. He also showed me a few goats he owned as well as a cow. He then led me to the main center of town. “Out of curiosity, what is it like in a family?” I decided to ask. I then learned, with much distaste, that men had more power. Only boys could go to school, and only rich boys for that matter. Their school was called a tablet house, or eduba. I also learned women could only leave houses with permission, but they COULD do a few things, like cook, sell property, and sometimes divorce.
