The boat of the riversToday we went down to the Tigris River and saw a Gufa for the first time! A Gufa is a boat that is made out of wood and dried animal skin. Large Gufa’s are over seven feet deep and are usually used to carry heavy cargoes.
The TemplesToday we stopped and looked at a ziggurat and saw some priests and priestesses walking in and out of the top tier of the large building. I learned that only priests and priestesses are alowed in this top tier. The ziggurat is used as the temple in each city-state; each city-state has a ziggurat to represent its god.
Welcome to UrukToday our tour guide took us to Uruk and said that it was one of the first major cities in the history of the world. Around 2900 BC it had an estimated population of about 80,000 people, making it the largest city in the world.
See you later Alligator Today is our last day in Mesopotamia so we went to the major city-state called Sumer. Sumerians invented the wagon wheel, plow, and a writing system called cuneiform. The Sumerians also gave us a twelve month calender based on the cycles of the moon and a number system based on 60. The time schedule is based on the 60 second minute, the 60 minute hour, and the 360 degree circle. Ready to go back home! Mesopotamia is located northeast of the Mediterranean Sea and north of the Fertile Crescent. Egypt is southwest of Mesopotamia.
