I’m so excited because today is the day Ms. Centko's class is traveling back in time to Mesopotamia. It's now one hour later, and we just arrived. I’m fascinated by all of the things I have seen so far. The one thing I am really interested in is scribes. Scribes are young boys who learned how to write. Some girls were able to be scribes, but not many.
Today I ran into a former scribe. He went by the name of Blahnklivlahnk. He told me that scribes wrote for people, and they were highly valued for their record keeping skills. Many scribes became wealthy. I think of them as modern day authors.
Today I decided to go to the temple to learn some deeper facts about scribes. I met Mr. Brathlrennatey who is a teacher at the school. He told me the way scribes learn how to write. First, the teacher would write a sample on a tablet, and the student would write his copy below or on the other side. Then the students would just keep on practicing all day. Scribes not only learned how to write, but they also learned how to make the clay tablets.
Today I went back to the temple and met a scribe! He was really nice and told me some interesting facts. For example, after years of education, scribes might serve in a variety of different positions. Also scribes not only worked as secretaries, accountants, and assistants, but also frequently had significant administrative responsibilities. Fhat writing was a bit difficult, but having the skill to write made them really rich and powerfull.
