DAY 3 The clothing that Ӧtzi was found in consisted of a hat, coat, leggings, and shoes. Ötzi’s coat was made of the hide of a domestic goat. On the inner side, there are numerous signs of scraping, probably marks from the process of cleaning the skin. The hides were most likely tanned using fat and smoke. Once tanned, the sections were cross-stitched together. The stitching was done with the fibers of animal sinews or an intestine made into rope. The coat was worn with the fur side out. Darker stripes were alternated with lighter ones for a striking pattern. The loincloth was made of cross-stitched goat leather. He wore a bearskin cap. Leggings were made of goat leather with deer skin laces to attach to his shoes so that they wouldn’t ride up while he walked. The shoes consist of an inner and outer part. The inner shoe is composed of grass netting. Its purpose was to hold hay in place which served as insulation material. The outer part is made of deerskin. Both are fastened to an oval-shaped sole made of bearskin with leather straps.
