DAY 2 I hiked down the Southern Alps following Erika and Helmut Simon, from Nuremberg, Germany. It was a really difficult hike, and I thought I was going to pass out. Finally! They found a shortcut, and we took it and went off of the marked trail. As we walked past the rocky gully filled with water melting from the heat where he was found, they noticed something brown on the gully bed. At first they thought it was some sort of trash, but as they looked closer, they realized with horror that they had found a human corpse. They freaked out!
I have to admit, it was nasty and gave off a putrid smell. Only his head, some of his shoulders, and part of his back jutted out of the ice and water. The body lay with its chest against a flat rock, and his face was obscured. Beside the corpse the Smiths noticed several pieces of rolled-up birch bark. Before leaving, they took a photograph of what they thought was the victim of a hiking accident a few years back. At this point there was no way they could know the significance of the body. Tomorrow I go to learn more about his clothes. Bye!
