Being an outsider at these funerals, I was able to experience man’s finals hours of life first hand. As death nears for a Mesopotamian, he may have a priest in attendance. What really caught my eye was the chair on the left that sat empty waiting for the sprit to rise from the corpse. Then I noticed the offering of food and drink for his journey to the afterlife. After his last breath, his body would be washed, anointed, and clothed, and lead out with all his worldly possessions. It was a new experience for me, and one I will never forget.
